2017-06-24 Captain's Day - Declan Fitzpatrick

Captain’s Day Declan Fitzpatrick at Kilkeel Golf Club.

The Captain’s week started with a ladies competition on Tuesday and the good weather saw a large number vying for the honours. Bernie Magee claimed the first prize winning on the back nine from Nora Knox. Eileen Hamill was third and the 9 hole prize winner was Maureen Ross. The Junior prize was claimed by the ever improving Kara Sloane.

Captain’s Day.
Saturday morning saw an early start with the Captain striking the first ball off the tee as a target for a ‘special prize’ for whoever was nearest to the ball throughout the day, eventually claimed by Thomas McCullough. The course was in excellent condition and the greens running true and fast which made the putting perilous, however good scores came in throughout the day and it was Simon Lawrence who claimed the overall first prize with an excellent 41 points. Junior McKnight was left to rue 3 putts at 16 and 17 however 40 points was good enough for second place while Paul McCullagh shot level par for 39 points for third. Sean Ross continued to ‘burn up the course’ with a three under 69 for the gross prize.

Other prizes included the front nine – Gregory Forsythe (22pts) and the back nine – Kevin O’Hare (21 pts) while Henry Flynn scored 35 points to secure the Past Captain’s prize on the day. James Bonner was closest to the pin on the 15th and James Morgan won the visitor’s prize with 34 points. The intermediate prize winner was James McCulla.

The atmosphere around the club all day was described as ‘buzzing’ with a carvery meal available for golfers after the trials of the day. The Captain, accompanied by his wife and daughter, presented the vast and generous array of prizes beside the 18th green before an enjoyable (and late) evening was had by all in the clubhouse.
