Juniors' Information

Kilkeel Golf Club has a flourishing Junior Section with well over 80 members. With membership categories for Under 11's,and up to18's and also an Intermediate/Student Section which takes the age up to 22; there is a range of ages and abilities for which various golf competitions can be enjoyed through the year.

These range from the our popular Saturday afternoon Stableford competitions, Wednesday competitions during the school term and special competitions throughout the year. These competitions are structured so as to encourage Juniors of all ages and abilities to play golf in a safe and fun environment.

With a proactive Junior Committee and excellent course and practice facilities the emphasis is on helping Juniors reach their full potential. This helps the Juniors in handicapping them at all ages, enabling them to progress from gaining a first Club handicap through to a full CONGU handicap based on age and ability.

With introductory sessions at local Primary and Secondary schools and a very active coaching and development programme headed up by the Club's Professional, Jerry Scullion, Juniors are really encouraged to take up playing golf. With the help of Junior Golf Ireland who play an active part in both the promotion and development of golf in the Mourne area, there is ample opportunity for Juniors to have fun, develop their skills and ability to play the game as well as to progress as individuals. The Club is also in the process of contacting a number of schools in the local area to take part in “The Girls in Golf” programme run through JGI.

More information on the Club's coaching programmes for Juniors is within the PGA Professional section of the site. In essence, the sessions at the Club comprise a mixture of structured coaching sessions throughout the year, together with on-course play, with coaches in attendance, to put the learning into practice. Recently, we had five Committee members attend a coaching course run by Junior Golf Ireland and will now provide assistance to the Club Professional.

A Juniors' Calendar of Events is produced annually, the section enjoys a Children's Halloween and Christmas Party, Quiz nights and other fun events throughout the year. This year will also see a Junior/Senior Competition played followed by a BBQ.

The Club is committed to abiding by the “Code of Ethics for Golf for Young People” as formulated by the GUI/ILGU/PGA and follows policy guidelines for Protection of Children in our care by:

  • Ensuring that all children, young people and vulnerable people have a fun, safe and positive experience when playing golf.

  • Recognising its responsibility to safeguard children's and young people's welfare by protecting them from poor practice, abuse and bullying.

  • Placing the welfare of young people first and adopting practices that support, protect and empower them.
