Sean Ross Course Record 64

Rossy's Record 64!

Sean Ross

The course record at Kilkeel Golf Club has been held since 2013 by Colm Campbell with a 66 however this was smashed by Sean Ross on Monday 29th May when he carded a fabulous 64 around the parkland course playing in the Newry & Mourne Community Transport (NMCT) sponsored open Stableford.

On a dampish breezy bank holiday Sean started off with birdies at 1, 3 and 4, parred the 5th and then eagled the 6th (drive and a seven iron to 10 feet). A bogey at the difficult 7th was forgotten with birdies at 8,9,10 and 12 before solid pars at 13 and 14. A birdie at the par three 15th left Sean at nine under par however a bogey at 17 presented him with the prospect of even a bogey at the last being enough to break the record. A solid par resulted in being inside the course record by two shots and a competition winning stableford score of 44 points.

During the round Sean said that he only sank one putt of more than 10 feet and the strength of his game on the day was hitting fairways and greens. 28 putts showed the evidence for that and Sean was left to ponder that under normal circumstances a 4,4,4 finish could have yielded an unbelievable 62! (It's amazing with golf that no matter how well we score we can always look back at the end and think we could have done better by a few shots!)

So how long will this record stand? It will take an extra special effort from anyone to shoot lower around the difficult course.

Sean was brought back down to earth when he recounted his feat to fiancée Sam and the response was, "Does that mean you don't have to play any more???"

Congratulations Sean.
