2021-08-08 – Kilkeel played in the semi final of the Pierce Purcell Shield against favourites Rossmore Golf Club from County Monaghan. As with all through the competition, Kilkeel were drawn as the away team so this meant that 2 matches were played at Kilkeel and 3 at Rossmore. The weather conditions at Rossmore were not good where a lot of rain had fallen fell and also a strong wind faced the first pair out of the blocks. Alan Graham and Stefan Parke held strong to the coat tails of the first Rossmore pairing on the front 9 but came lost out in the run in. Next up were Paul ‘bogey’ Burns and Shane Lowey and the team Captain admitted that they didn’t play their best golf with gaining another point. All hopes then turned to the ‘evergreen’ Brendan Scullion and big hitting Patrick Quinn. This match was very tight with both teams giving nothing away and on the 17th, when it looked like Kilkeel where going to go 1 up, the dreaded message came through that the games in Kilkeel ended with a point each and so the match was lost. Paschal Morgan and Vice Captain Robert Hall won their game but Michael McAnulty and James Greene just came up short to a very good pairing from Rossmore and sadly the Kilkeel run was over.  There were however many positives to be taken from this campaign with 4 new players on the team that have never played in Inter-Club matches before. Team Captain Shane thanked each and every one of his team for time and effort they afforded to the campaign and hopefully all will try again next season for equally competitive matches and perhaps even a run right through to the winning post.
