22nd May 2022 Rossmore Cup match v Silverwood at Kilkeel
Kilkeel came up against a strong Silverwood team and fought out a 2 all draw with also being level on holes. First out of the blocks was the young boys Brendan Scullion and Harry Black and despite Brendan turning with individually with 21 points (if playing Stableford) Harry and himself couldn’t shake the 2 steady Silverwood players and lost on the 16th 3&2. However knowing Brendan and Harry they will be all out next week to get revenge. Next up was Ryan Trainor and Eric Nicholson. Both players fed off each other and if one struggled other, the other stepped up and as a result of their ‘dove-tailing’ came out winners 2&1. Third up was Brian McKay and Caolan Campbell. These two got off to flying start going 3 up after 4 but got pegged back to 1 down after 8. However this only spurred the 2 lads on and they turned their standard of golf up to another level. With the blend of Caolan’s youth and Brian’s experience, they pushed on from 8th and ran out4&3 winners. The anchor pair was John Davenport and Shane Lowey. The match was tight for first 5 holes then Silverwood pushed ahead going 3 up after 13. Things were not looking good for the Kilkeel pair but with a birdie on 15 and par on 16 they got it back to 1 down. However, 2 great shots from one of the Silverwood players to reach the green on 17 let them close out the game 2&1. So after the home fixture it’s all to play for next Sunday in Silverwood and with the determination of the Kilkeel Team very evident, it’s not over yet!
