NHS 4 Nations Championship
Back in May of this year, Leslie Edgar qualified to be part of the 12 member NHS Northern Ireland team to compete in the 4 Nations Championship. It was held in the Kingfisher Country Estate at the Hilton Templepatrick on the Monday 14th & Tuesday 15th August.
Monday morning started with a 9 hole opener with England & Wales on the front 9 and Scotland and Northern Ireland on the back 9. (Leslie scored 15pts.) After lunch there was a full 18 hole competition with England and Scotland going out first and Wales and NI to follow. (Leslie scored 30 pts.) All scores and cards were returned for the day and players’ scores were entered on the board so team captains could calculate how they were progressing. Team NI were in the lead after day one but this was not made official by the organisers.
Day 2 started with 18 holes, England and NI going out first with Scotland and Wales to follow. (Leslie scored 34 pts with 3 birdies on the back 9.) After the morning’s 18 holes, it was clear that team NI had a strong lead going into the final 9 holes. In the afternoon, Scotland and NI played the front 9 with England and Wales playing the back 9. On This 9 Leslie had another 15 pts.
Leslie stated that the course was in immaculate conditions and the greens were extremely fast which didn’t necessarily suit everyone as Leslie commented that he had quite a few 3 putts over the 2 days.
When the scores were announced at the Gala Dinner on Tuesday evening, Wales were 4th, Scotland 3rd, England 2nd with 997pts and Team NI finished with 1159 pts to claim the 4 Nations NHS Championship. The NI captain also won the overall individual prize with 109 pts.
The victorious Northern Ireland Captain was presented with the trophy which was particularly gratifying as the NI team had not been able to participate in the competition for the last few years due to Covid restrictions.
Congratulations to our own Leslie who contributed admirably to the victory.
